Batam, Riau Islands, May 22 (Antara) - Eleven Indian citizens have been caught by immigration officers in Batam in the province of Riau Islands for allegedly overstaying.
"We caught them on Tuesday evening. We held nine of them because their stay permits have expired and released two others because their stay permits are still effective," head of supervision of Immigration Office Class I here, Rafli, said here on Wednesday.
He said the Indian citizens had stayed in Indonesia for 40 to 60 days surpassing their permits for staying for seven or 30 days.
"They entered from Singapore through Batam Center International Seaport using visa on arrival facility for seven or 30 day stay. Although they did not enter together they stayed in the same hotel in Batam," he said.
Foreigners from 60 countries entering Indonesia through Batam using visa on arrival facility are required to pay US$10 for seven-day stay and US$25 for 30 days. The regulation also applies in other regions in the country.
The Indian citizens said they had come to Indonesia because someone had promised them a job but "until they were arrested they were still unemployed," Rafli said.
The immigration authorities would continue investigating them with regard to their real motives to enter the country.
"We have had a bad experience of PT Drydock Batam (rioting) incident and therefore we would investigate further," he said.
The Indian nationals are confirmed to have violated the immigration law. (Yosep/O. Tamindael)
